Frequently Asked Questions
I would like to participate, but I don’t think I have musical talent. No one else in my family has ever done anything in music. People say that I’m “tone deaf.”
Professor Roy Ernst, founder of the New Horizon Band concept, says that EVERYONE has musical talent. “In more than 40 years of teaching, I’ve never found anyone who couldn’t learn music,” Ernst states. If no one in your family makes music, you would become a great example for them by starting.
Is there a cost to participate?
There is a $35 per month band dues and a one time $10,000 initiation fee. (Just kidding. It's $25 bucks to join. We use the dues to pay our Band Director, get new music, and pay performance licensing fees (BMI, ASCAP, etc). You will be a member in good standing as long as you pay your tuition and show up regularly. Brad Davis, the director, will be responsible for all musical instruction, direction and placement in the band. No credit will be given for absences. Payment for each month will be due on the first rehearsal of the month. You will not be paid for performances
Does the band provide the sheet music?
Yes, the band provides the sheet music for the tunes we play.
Is an audition required?
No.
What if I suck?
Stop being so hard on yourself. You don't suck.
Do I need to provide my own instrument?
Yes. You also need to bring a music stand. Most band members use a tablet to organize their music but sheet music can also be printed out on paper.
Is there an information session?
Yes! You can come to a rehearsal and check us out.
What if I can't commit to a weekly rehearsal?
Being part of the band requires a commitment by you. We have a list of substitute players to cover for occasional absences.
Do I need to be able to read music?
Our rehearsals are not jam sessions. We play from written charts. If you don't currently read music, there will be a learning curve but after some months you will know how to read. If you read music, you will be become a better sight reader.
